A game of golf in central Portugal can be difficult to squeeze in. In a year or so there will be many more courses around the immediate area to choose from. In the mean time - where can we practice?
There are plans for several golf courses to be built within an hours drive from Coimbra toward Viseu. We hope by the end of 2009 these will be open to the public. (This is on top of the brand new Montebelo Golf Course, also in the direction of Viseu). For the moment, Quinta das Lagrimas, in the very heart of Coimbra has a sprawling pitch and putt course on which to hone your skills. At the same site there is also a driving range allowing you to practice your long and short game.
The pitch and putt course is nine holes and beautifully tended and landscaped. Each hole is also a par three, meaning that there’s still a competitive element. We’ve played there ourselves and enjoyed it tremendously. Upon arrival you are given score cards and can hire clubs and balls if need be. The cost was twelve euros per person and, once paid, you may stay for as long as you wish on the course.
Quinta das Lagrimas is a world heritage site and a five-star hotel housed in a historic eighteenth century country house in Coimbra, Portugal. The hotel is surrounded by twelve hectares of gardens and exotic trees, transplanted to Portugal from several countries around the world. The Bamboo Garden Spa boasts an indoor pool, sauna, Turkish bath, jetted tub and spa treatments such as massage and aromatherapy. The spa centre also features an array of fitness equipment. Hunger pangs are satisfied at Arcadas da Capela Restaurant. Chefs at Arcadas utilize fresh organic produce and herbs from onsite gardens. The menu also features around 600 vintage wines. In addition, Aqua Latin Food Restaurant fuses Mediterranean and International flavors.
