THE AREA:
Alvaiazere is large village with broader community consisting of 8 Parishes, Almoster, Alvaiázere, Maçãs de Caminho, Maçãs de Dona Maria, Pelmá, Pussos and Rego da Murta with a total of some 10,000 people.
The area is increasingly popular with forign property hunters. Named by Arab invaders “Lands of the falconer” Alvaiazere is located in the centre of Central Portugal’s (Beira Litoral) region. It plays host to many traditional festas throughout the year. Being a larger village with council headquarters it has a very attractive, large outdoor swimming pool with a surprisingly good restaurant. Throughout the village are several bars, cafes, shops, supermarkets, sports hall, dedicated fiesta centre and schools. The cinema, library and free internet cafe are more recent amenities.
The region is surrounded by Roman ruins and historic castles, which are some of the most beautiful, historic and well preserved in Iberia.
For instance Tomar and the Knights Templar are only 30Km away (half an hour) and well worth a look.
Local activities must include gastronomy and walking. Guided walks in both Portuguese and English are common, but you should feel free to wander down the public footpaths through forests and fields as much as you like. The views are often spectacular.
LOCAL ROADS:
The roads in the immediate area are all of tarmac or, in some cases, maintained stone track. Any car would be comfortable driving throughout this area.
