Sea Fishing in Portugal

From The Shore...

Shore fishing requires an annual licence costing 12 Euros (Licença de Pesca Desportiva) this enables you to fish for Sea fish from the shore throughout Portugal. Many local fishing shops sell this liscence.

If you ever watch the fishing nets being pulled up on to the beach at Costa de Lavos during the summer months you will be amazed by the huge range of species of fish. Sand eels by the thousand, mackerel, rays, bass, hake, plaice, blue fish, bream and even the occasional small cod. Proof if any were needed that the pristine western coastline has all that a sea angler could wish for.

The most commonly fished for species from piers and jetties are black headed bream, sea bass, eels and large mullet. Nearly all of these are destined for the pot!

Most people float fish for the various types of sea bream with tiny rag worm baits. Some fish 2 or 3 hook paternosters. At night the use of light sticks inserted into the top of the float provides very good bite indication. A piece of fresh Mackerel with the blood oozing out is good for many species in the dark.

An exiting period to fish in the estuaries is in the early summer when there are millions of fish fry in the water. The hungry European Sea Bass come in for a few weeks of frantic activity. With many large sea bass jumping out of the water in pursuit of baby fish. Bass to near 20lb are reported but more normal is 3 or 4lb.

At this time of year a large bubble float, weighted with water to aid distance casting is wound back across the estuary with a small plastic sand eel or spinner towed behind on a 2 to 3 meter trace. Also a very effective technique on surf beaches.

You may also be surprised by the odd large cuttlefish, if they don't break your line try immediately for a second as they often travel in pairs and make very good eating.

Fishing from the shore is normally carried out during dawn and dusk when there is less sea bird activity and the fish feel a little safer and more willing to feed.

There are mile upon mile of golden sand beaches south of Figueira da Foz which have shell fish and shrimp in abundance. These are the feeding grounds of the large sea bass and flatfish such as sole, flounder and rays. Beach casting is required with rigs of multiple small hooks and grip leads due to the tidal surge. Where to fish as in other countries look at where the locals are fishing for easy access and good fishing spots.
