Water Issues at Cheap Property in Central Portugal

This is an article continuing on from http://ourportugal.wordpress.com/ regarding bargain properties in Central Portugal. Check out that article to see other questions often asked regarding cheap property in Central Portugal.

3) Will bore-hole give you all the water that you need.
All bore holes require a license before they can be drilled. You cannot guarantee getting a license. It is by far best to find out for yourself first. The licenses to extract water are valid for fixed periods. The pump that lifts the water from the bore hole will normally require a single phase electrical supply of its own.

4) What will it cost to install a bore-hole in my low cost house?
Depending upon the ease of access to the drill site for the borehole company and the type of rock and the depth that they have to drill to find water, the price will be between 5,000 and 7,000 Euros. So now you have electricity and water installed, although this may have doubled the cost of your cheap house before any building work has even been done. Not all bore holes find water. We know of a house which has a good supply coming from the bore hole. Their next door neighbor had contractors drilling to great depth and couldn’t find any.

Let’s say that you get lucky and believe yourself to have all the water you need. Although the bore hole will probably supply you with lots of water, there is no guarantee of the quality. It may not be “potable” drinkable due to a bad taste, bad smell, silt contamination dissolved salts or bacterial contamination. There are analytical test centers who can certify your water as fit to drink. You should have it tested every year. The additional cost of filtration and treatment equipment for this free water will add significantly to the cost of your water supply for the remote bargain house.
